About

Snowlinux is a Linux distribution for beginners and professionals offer a traditional-looking desktop.

It was founded in December 2010.

The first edition was released in July 2011 as a RC and it was called "Cold". In the following month (August 2011) there was released the stable release.

It didn't take long until the other editions (KDE, XFCE, LXDE, E17) followed.

Although the first edition of Snowlinux didn't had much improvements over its Debian-base, it was a great success for all of us.

While the second and third edition of Snowlinux brought much more improvements to the users, the Snowlinux team already worked on a second edition, an Ubuntu-based.

The latest Snowlinux editions are a great success.

We're having a download count of wide over ~10,000 downloads per month at the moment.

As a PC user, you certainly ask yourself the following questions:

What aims has Snowlinux? Well, we want to offer a stable and fast Linux distribution as the most others, too. Beyond we want to be as easy as Ubuntu, with a Debian base. A Debian-base has much advantages in stability, speed and so on. The only problem is, it's not too easy. We want let Debian work as easy as Ubuntu. Also we want to offer traditional-looking Desktop, in contrast to Ubuntu's Unity.

How often do we release a new version? We have a release cycle of about 6 months. It depends strongly on the urgency of a new release. If there are much improvements and too much for a new release, we could release a bit faster. If it's a time where improvements take a bit more time, we could release a bit slower.

Which desktop environments does Snowlinux offer? We offer the following desktop environments: MATE, Cinnamon, XFCE and E17 (Debian-based) and MATE and Cinnamon (Ubuntu-based).

How can I know, what the Debian-based edition and what the Ubuntu-based edition is? Please lake a look at the Download page. We listed all editions there.
